Bowmore Bulletin: Your latest update from the Bowmore team

Every month, we share some of the highlights of what’s been happening in and around the Bowmore Group. This month, we celebrate various appearances in the press, two new team members, and sporting events with netball sponsorship and another winning race from Helen Best.

Bowmore named one of the Top 100

We’re thrilled to have been named in Citywire’s New Model Adviser Top 100.

The Top 100 is decided based on factors such as investment in new advisers and qualifications. The financial planning profession has been founded on people leaving big businesses to set up on their own, to pursue their own vision and serve clients better.

Bowmore has been recognised following a year of investing in marketing. This involved a new website, public relations and a big social media push. All of which we look forward to pursuing to even greater effect in the coming weeks, months and years.

Press coverage

The Times

It’s always pleasing to be asked for a comment on a major news story, and we were delighted to see Bowmore Asset Management recently featured in The Times.

The story discussed how the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow, and how you can limit the damage it may cause to your savings.

“High dividend stocks can play an important role in portfolios for those wishing to generate income from investments,” said Charles Incledon at Bowmore Asset Management. “With inflation climbing, they are only going to become more important. Interest on cash and the yields from government bonds offer very little protection against the current rates of inflation.” – An extract from The Times.

The Express and City A.M.

Charles was quoted again in The Express and City A.M., both running stories about the worrying effect of inflation on savings held in Cash ISAs.

“The interest rates on ISAs are so low that leaving money in one today will just mean watching inflation whittle it away […] Investing in funds gives people a better opportunity to beat inflation. Typically, returns from equities outperform cash over the medium and long term.” – Charles Incledon.

This is Money

Published on 9 October 2021, this news story highlighted how research shows that more than 40 UK-listed companies have seen their share price rise by at least 1,000% over the last decade.

“Investors looking for significant growth don’t need to pin all their hopes on companies listed at the smaller and arguably more speculative end of the market.

“Investors can achieve exponential growth from steady, high-quality companies. They should look for firms that have high returns on capital and are able to scale and compound those returns over time.” – Charles Incledon

Owen Moore wins PAM’s Top 40 under 40, 2021

Aged 32, Owen Moore, one of our talented team of investment managers, has been recognised as one of the “Top 40 under 40” advisers in wealth management in the UK, as awarded by Private Asset Managers (PAM).

Owen joined Bowmore Asset Management in 2016. In the last five years, he has become a key member of the investment management team.

When Owen joined the business, Bowmore had less than £20 million of funds under management. Now, he oversees £190 million of client money and recently joined our asset allocation and investment committee.

Over the past 18 months, Owen has helped establish Bowmore’s ESG mandates, now the mandate of choice for any new investments.

Meet our new team members

Micky Baker – Trainee Paraplanner

New trainee paraplanner Micky Baker joined Bowmore Financial Planning in September. Find out more in his Q&A…

Congratulations on your new role at Bowmore. Can you start by telling us a little about your background? What were you doing before joining Bowmore Financial Planning?

Thanks very much! I’ve been working in financial services in various administration roles for many years at Lloyds Bank, where I completed the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning. More recently, I was working at Sanlam UK.

What is your role with Bowmore and what are you responsible for?

I am a paraplanner and responsible for providing support to the wealth planners. In any one day, I could be completing research and analysis, writing up suitability reports, or anything else that is needed to ensure the right advice is provided to clients.

What excites you most about working with Bowmore?

Having come from a corporate background, it’s very exciting to be at an independent company where I can have a bigger impact on successful outcomes for clients. I’m also pleased to be in a role where I can use the technical knowledge I gained from completing the regulated financial planning RO exams.

What led you to pursue a career in financial planning?

It was more by accident than by design. When I was made redundant from EE, I needed a job and Lloyds were hiring. An opportunity came up to study for the RO exams with all costs covered by the company, which seemed like a no-brainer. The rest is history.

What do you do in your spare time?

Much of my spare time is taken up by nerdy pursuits like playing Dungeons & Dragons, computer gaming, and performing with my improv comedy group.

My wife and I also find the time for long dog walks on the many scenic routes around Bristol and going on adventures in our camper van.

Can you share one thing that few people know about you?

As a child, I was in a choir, which led to lots of fun experiences, including performing in the kid’s chorus of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Bristol Hippodrome and appearing on Blue Peter (yes, I still have the badge).

Max Petite – Investment Manager

New investment manager, Max Petite, joined Bowmore Asset Management this month. Find out what makes him tick in his revealing Q&A…

Congratulations on your new role at Bowmore. Can you start by telling us about your background? What were you doing before joining Bowmore Asset Management?

I am extremely excited to start working with everyone at Bowmore.

Even though I am French, I have a mixed background as I grew up in Brussels and Boston.

I completed my bachelor’s degree in Business and Engineering in Brussels. I then moved to the UK to start a master’s in Accounting and Finance, which I completed at the University of Bath.

After an internship at Pictet & Cie in Paris, I joined LGT Vestra in London as an analyst within their Model Portfolio Service (MPS) team. After a couple of years in the MPS team, I moved across to LGT Vestra’s Private Office, where I spent the last two years.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me at Bowmore Asset Management!

What is your role with Bowmore and what are you responsible for?

I have joined Bowmore Asset Management as an investment manager.

I will be responsible for conducting portfolio analysis, investment writing, and market research.

I’m also excited to be joining the Investment Committee, to which I will bring market outlooks, portfolio monitoring and investment ideas.

Additionally, I will support new business development across both existing and new platforms.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to play sports. I enjoy running, swimming, playing squash, and golf. When I’m on holiday, I like to go scuba diving and water skiing.

I am also a huge fan of the French national rugby team. I can’t wait to attend the 2023 Rugby World Cup. I hope to live long enough to see them win one day…

I am also known to be a bit of a bookworm and a moviegoer.

Can you share one thing that few people know about you?

I am actually left-handed. Because of a sequence of unfortunate events, I broke my left arm twice in a row at the age of six, so had to learn to write with my right hand. This could explain my handwriting!

Bowmore sponsors netball team, captained by Jill Ellicott

It’s fair to say the netball team, captained by our very own Jill Ellicott and sponsored by Bowmore, has had a tricky start to the season.

The team has been beset by injury – our star player has torn her Achilles and Jill has trapped a nerve in her shoulder – suicide plank is not recommended!

We’re 2.25 games in and our challenges include:

  • The first game being called off due to a lightning storm in the first 10 minutes.
  • The second game was against some very tall, young Reading Juniors. Final score: Bowmore 15 – 21 Juniors.
  • The third game was against another young, bouncy team with a very accurate GA (goal attack). Final score: Bowmore 10 vs a score nobody wants to recall!

And finally, there’s no stopping Helen Best

Last month, Helen completed an impromptu 10k run for Cancer Research in 55 minutes. This month she finished a challenging triathlon in a little over 90 minutes. And she’s still smiling!
